About TANASI
Tanasi crafts a rich, world-inspired mountain sound, blending the soulful echoes of roots artists from across the globe. As National Endowment for the Arts 2025 USArtists International Grant Recipients, Tanasi is honored to have been chosen to continue fostering cross-cultural creative collaboration, celebrating music’s power to unite, transcend cultures and borders, and reveal the shared rhythms of our humanity.
Tanasi features the tight, sister-like harmonies of MerleFest-winning songwriter Anya Hinkle and Mary Lucey (Biscuit Burners, Uncle Earl), along with the inimitable dobro musings of Billy Cardine, recognized worldwide for his distinctive voice on all things slide, of whom Jerry Douglas has said, “I couldn’t have picked a better example of where the Dobro is now or what the possibilities are with the instrument.”
Individual members of the trio have toured the world over, from Japan to India, Nepal to Hawai’i, Sweden to France, and across the US at festivals such as Bonnaroo, Rockygrass, and Merlefest and on stages such as The Ryman Auditorium, The Kennedy Center, and Carnegie Hall.
Few ensembles show a dedication to their craft that is so remarkably well-traveled and with so much experience. For over 20 years, the curiosity and love of roots music has inspired Tanasi's band members to seek out collaborations across the globe, sitting down for countless hours playing music with people who may be very different from each other and don’t even speak the same language.Tanasi's world grass sound is a vibrant celebration of music’s power to unite, transcend cultural boundaries, and reveal the shared rhythms of our humanity. Their songs find their way into the depths of the heart, resonating with an undeniable warmth and authenticity.
"Tanasi is a talented trio featuring Billy Cardine, Anya Hinkle, and Mary Lucey. They perform original music that reflects the musical traditions of Southern Appalachia with a 21st Century feel. It is hauntingly beautiful music, thought-provoking, and not to be missed.” -Claire Armbruster, Artistic Director for Earl Scruggs Music Festival and Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival
